Sky High Treks and Tours
Indus Valley to Rupshu (8-10 days)
This is a moderately demanding high altitude trek that takes you from the Indus Valley to the western edge of the vast Tibetan plateau through huge valleys, deep gorges and barren deserts. It is remote and sparsely populated by nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples.

The route starts near Hemis about an hours drive from Leh and takes you up a scenic valley and climbs steeply to the Gongmaru La (5100 m) with superb views back toward the Indus and across to the Zanskar Range and the vertical ice walls of Kang Yatze and then over into the high altitude pastures of Nimaling. Through the Zanskar mountains the scenery is wild and spectacular with three more passes and only tiny winter settlements as signs of human habitation.

The trek ends on the vast plain of Kanchuthang which is dotted with the black yak hair tents of the nomads who come to graze their herds on the summer pastures. A guide and pack horses are essential and you must be completely self-sufficient. The villages are deserted in summer and very few people travel through the area.
