22-Day trek, October 2014
22-day trek via Markha/Kharnak/Phertsay/Lake Tsomoriri to Rumtse, October 2014, climbing Mentok

Starting from Chilling this trek led me through the Markha valley which was glowing in the most fantastic autumnal colours. At the Kang Yatze, one of my favourite mountains, we turned to a much more wild area. We crossed many passes at heights of more or less 5000 m. The manifold panoramas of the mountain landscapes are indescribable.

We reached Lake Tsomoriri under perfect weather conditions. This deep blue lake surrounded by 6000er mountains is a fascinating setting and truly a paradise for photographers. Due to the season, light was changing constantly. From deep blue it changed to pastel colours, turning the landscape into a painting. I climbed the Mentok (6250m) with my guide Rigzen. When we reached the head of the glacier the moon rose in a perfect eclipse.

We were quite puzzled about this red big ball, thinking that the sun was early that day. However, the sun rose only one hour later, bringing the long awaited warmth. When we reached the top at 12:00, the view was amazing and we were extremely happy.

The path to Rumtse led us to the beautiful lake Tsokar, and we crossed several passes (5000m).

This trek is hard for sure and requires fitness and strength. The experiences you gain and the views compensate for all the efforts.

Rigzen, my guide and cook, and Taschi with his four horses were the perfect team. Even unexpected situations were solved brilliantly. That’s the kind of trekking I fancy!

For all of you who love wind, sun, coldness, mountains, trekking, wild horses, blue sheep, lonely wilderness and more this trek is perfect, especially in this season. Furthermore it’s a good training for future climbs of 7000ers.

Many, many thanks, Rigzen and Taschi!

And many thanks to Tsering skyhightreks.for the perfect organization!
